New Funding Model Offers More Skills and Opportunity in the Roads Sector
Plans to conduct over 50 capacity development and training programs by the end of 2019, with the purpose to build proper capacity, including human resources, necessary skills and capital in the roads sector, has been carried out by the South African Roads Federation (SARF).
These programs are required to help push growth in the roads sector. Entering November, SARF has already conducted up to 42 training programs in 2019, which suggests how serious the federation is about improving and adding value to the roads sector. While not everyone working in the sector, or the construction sector, can obtain a degree, knowledge is still very important and required to promote efficiency in the work environment. It is also needed to prevent unnecessary mistakes from being made.
Growth for the Win
Of the 42 courses that have already been presented to employees in the sector, includes in-house SARF training for the Department of Transport in KZN, along with the South African National Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral) Southern Region office in the Eastern Cape.
In-house courses presented to Sanral were mainly focused on community engagement and road safety audits.
SARF additionally presented training courses to the Department of Public Works, situated in the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and North West throughout March. Training courses also reached many other provincial road departments and included information on the construction and maintenance of roads, along with gravel road design.
SARF has provided feedback on their training programs, adding that the programs are well attended by many professionals. The fact that these programs are accredited training courses, serves as a bonus to professionals who prefer the courses they engage in to add some value to their professional career and work environment. All courses are accredited with the Engineering Council of South Africa and offer continuous professional development (CPD) points. Nearly 17 programs are also accredited for CPD with project consultants at the South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions.
